Embedded Resistors for Integrated Circuit Chip Packaging

Ohmega Ticer thin film embedded resistor materials are used in advanced integrated circuit packaging and high-density interconnect (HDI) PCB designs, enabling resistor integration directly within multilayer organic packages, reducing form factor, and freeing surface area for active components in space-constrained designs.

Why Embedded Resistors Matter for Chip Packaging

The demand for high-speed, high-density electronic devices has compelled chip packaging designers to adopt advanced techniques including embedded passives. The challenge is straightforward: discrete surface-mount resistors consume valuable surface area on the package substrate, drive up layer count to accommodate routing, and introduce parasitics that degrade signal integrity at the data rates modern ICs operate at.

Embedded resistor technology resolves this by:

  • Eliminating surface-area consumption. Resistors live inside the substrate stackup rather than on top of it, freeing real estate for active components and improving I/O density.
  • Reducing form factor. Documented PCB area reduction of up to 40% in high-density designs, with corresponding improvements in package thickness, weight, and bill of materials.
  • Improving signal integrity. Parasitic inductance drops from 0.5–1.0 nH (typical SMD) to less than 0.1 nH; capacitance and insertion loss drop in parallel. The result is cleaner termination, better impedance matching, and reduced EMI/crosstalk in high-speed digital and mixed-signal designs.
  • Eliminating solder joint failure modes. No solder joint means no solder fatigue, a known failure mode in package-level reliability testing.
  • Simplifying assembly. Embedded resistors require no pick-and-place, no solder paste, and no reflow pass for those resistor functions, reducing assembly steps and improving first-pass yield.

Integration with Standard PCB Fabrication

A core advantage of Ohmega Ticer materials for chip packaging is process compatibility.

Standard print and etch

OhmegaPly® and TCR® RCM materials are laminated to dielectric the same way as any other copper foil and processed by PCB fabricators through standard subtractive print and etch processes. No specialized fabrication equipment is required.

A qualified supply base

Over 70 PCB fabricators worldwide offer reliable mass production of embedded resistors using Ohmega Ticer materials.

CAD and simulation support

Ohmega Ticer publishes design guidance for both Altium Designer and Cadence OrCAD X / Allegro PCB Editor environments, including footprint creation, layer stack setup, Gerber output, and design rule check (DRC) configuration. Because embedded resistors are inherently planar, they are accurately modeled in existing PCB electromagnetic and circuit simulators, eliminating the abstract electrical models often required for discrete SMDs.

Design Considerations for Chip Packaging

Designing with embedded resistors in package substrates requires coordination on resistor geometry (the L/W ratio multiplied by sheet resistivity determines the final value), tolerance budgeting (final tolerance is a combination of material tolerance, lamination effects, and PCB etching precision), and Gerber documentation (a separate file is required for the resistor layer).
